Microfilm Scanning

Our microfilm scanning service enables organisations to efficiently utilise images that are currently stored on microfilm rolls in today’s digital world.

The technology we have deployed allows us to scan the microphotographs stored on the microfilm rolls, which are optically reduced to approximately 4% of the original document size, and convert them into digital images that duplicate the appearance and size of the original documents.

Our team is greatly experienced in this area. They carefully scan and review each microphotograph, ensuring that all the image details are digitally captured. The team then indexes the digital images, makes them text searchable if required and securely delivers them to you electronically or on an encrypted hard drive.

Microfilm Reel

Microfilm Roll Scanning

Microfilm is a roll (reel) of microphotographs. 16mm microfilm was typically used to archive A3/A4 documents while 35mm microfilm was typically used to archive large format documents. 16mm microfilm can store up to 2400 images while 35mm microfilm can store up to 700 images.

Microfiche Scanning

Microfiche is a flat piece of film containing microphotographs, organised in rows and columns. 16mm microfiche typically stores A3/A4 documents while 35mm microfiche typically stores large-format documents. COMBI Microfiche contains both 16mm and 35mm images.

Aperture card

Aperture Card Scanning

An aperture card has a cut-out window into which a 35mm microfilm chip is mounted and it is typically punched with machine-readable metadata associated with the microfilm image. The card is also printed across the top for visual identification. It was typically used to store large technical drawings or plans.

How It Works, Step By Step

Glenbeigh Collection Vehicle

Nationwide Collection

We can arrange for a GPS-tracked GRM vehicle to collect your microfilm reels anywhere in Ireland and securely transport them to our scanning facility. We can supply archive boxes to place the microfilm reels, microfiche, or aperture cards into.

Microfilm Scanning

Using the latest scanning technologies each file is carefully scanned and converted to a digital image, ensuring optimum results and clarity. The scanned files are organised in your preferred folder structure layout.

Post Production

Post Production

Our scanning software further enhances the scanned images by de-skewing, cropping black edges, optimising image sharpness, rotating images and reducing the file size if required.

Indexing Icon

File Indexing

Each scanned file is indexed using your chosen naming convention to facilitate future retrieval, for example, using the name on the microfilm label.

Quality Checked

Quality Checked

A stringent quality control system is adhered to throughout the scanning process. At the end of the process, our quality team check the scanned images and indexes against the original microfilm reel. Files that fail quality control are scanned again. They are then re-checked for quality assurance.

Data Capture Service

Data Capture

Each scanned file can be processed through our optical character recognition (OCR) software which reads and recognises each typed word to allow full-text retrieval.

Secure Tranfser Online

Data Delivery

The completed data can be transferred to you securely via our cloud portal or uploaded to your chosen document management system. Alternatively, the data can be returned to you on an encrypted hard drive or USB. The original files can be returned to you, stored offsite or shredded.
